WHAT IS THE PEACE FOR JUSTICE TEAM? The Peace For Justice ministry at Peace was formed with a three-part purpose:
We are called "to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8) The Peace For Justice ministry seeks ways to do that in our community. We are open to new ideas and ways to impact social justice. If you want more information or are interested in joining this ministry, please contact Kara Shell. |
HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
1. Join our planning team
The Peace for Justice planning team meets monthly to swap local education & advocacy opportunities and plan activities to support our three-fold purpose: education, action & culture. Join our team to be a part of the conversation and support our efforts to address the root causes of hunger, poverty, racism and other social justice issues.
2. Learn more about advocacy through the ELCA!
This year, Peace for Justice is focusing on building our muscles in advocacy. Advocacy is actions that support a particular cause or policy. Learn more about the importance of Advocacy to address the ROOT CAUSE of injustice, poverty, hunger, racism and many more issues by visiting the ELCA’s advocacy website: https://www.elca.org/advocacy.
We recommend starting with this 90min webinar that provides a great introduction to advocacy as the church: https://youtu.be/w7XXNZCdUF4
“Advocacy is the practical work of love, seeking justice, working compassionately, living humbly, advocating for equality & human dignity for all who have been created in the image and likeness of God” – Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, The Episcopal Church
3. Get involved in advocacy with Peace for Justice and Honesty for Ohio Education!
The Peace for Justice team has selected Honesty for Ohio Education (H4OE) as our first advocacy partner. Supported by the Ohio Council of Churches, H4OE is a non-profit organization advocating for Honest Education.
Visit H4OE’s website to learn more about their mission and what “Honest Education” means for our communities: https://www.honestyforohioeducation.info/what-is-honesty-in-education.html
With guidance from Honesty for Ohio Education, Peace for Justice will support good legislation, oppose legislation that is restrictive or discriminatory, monitor state and local boards of education meetings and submit public testimony as appropriate to the various State and local entities. We will share through our Peace for Justice newsletter and the weekly Peace2U opportunities to get involved.

CURRENT ADVOCACY NEEDS
Ohio HB 322 and HB 327: Prohibitions on instruction of “Divisive Concepts”
- Ohio House Bills 322 and 327 have been introduced, which would restrict the teaching of certain concepts and topics in K-16 classrooms. HB 322 primarily targets public schools and state agencies, but the Ohio Department of Higher Education would be included under the definition of state agency.
- The Ohio Education Association states that “HB 322 and HB 327 contain a toxic combination of murky prohibitions about instruction on ‘divisive’ concepts that are linked to extreme penalties for students, educators, and schools.”
- Information about these bills is available at the Honesty for Ohio Education site: https://www.honestyforohioeducation.info/
